The Department of Civil Engineering, UIU, hosted an impactful seminar today, titled “Solid Waste Management in Bangladesh: Critical Issues and Future Opportunities for Environmental Change,” delivered by Dr. Tariq Bin Yousuf, renowned SWM Specialist and former Additional Chief Engineer, Dhaka North City Corporation.
With over 25 years of national and international experience, Dr. Tariq shared valuable insights on Bangladesh’s growing waste challenges, rapid urbanization, plastic pollution, inefficient municipal systems, and climate-related vulnerabilities. He discussed the full chain of waste management practices, from collection and transport to recycling, treatment, and final disposal.
The session highlighted forward-looking strategies including source segregation, circular economy transitions, EPR frameworks, digital transformation in SWM, and the Three-Zeros philosophy (Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment). Students also explored problem-tree and solution-tree exercises to understand root causes and sustainable interventions.
This seminar offered an inspiring perspective on waste as a resource, encouraging future engineers to drive innovation, green entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship for a more sustainable Bangladesh.
