A special seminar titled Urban Planning for Sustainable Buildings, Infrastructures, and Cities in Bangladesh was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, UIU. The session was delivered by Professor Dr. Adil Mohammed Khan, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Jahangirnagar University, President of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP), Director of the Institute for Planning and Development (IPD), and Board of Trustees Member of the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP). As one of the leading urban planners in Bangladesh, Dr. Adil has significantly contributed to sustainable urban development, spatial planning, disaster resilience, and climate-responsive infrastructure across the country.
During the seminar, Dr. Adil discussed Bangladesh’s rapid urbanization, rising climate risks, and the urgent need for integrated planning and engineering to build resilient and livable cities. He elaborated on the planning-to-engineering workflow, sustainable building principles, climate-responsive design, and resilient structural practices. The importance of water-sensitive urban design for reducing waterlogging and green–blue infrastructure for mitigating urban heat was emphasized as essential components of future-ready cities. Sustainable transport planning, including transit-oriented development, non-motorized transport networks, and BRT–MRT integration, was also highlighted. Smart planning tools such as GIS, BIM, and drone-based surveys were presented as key instruments for modern, evidence-based city development.
The seminar was interactive and engaging, with enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students. It provided valuable insights into how thoughtful planning, sound engineering practices, and sustainability-driven design come together to shape safer, greener, and more efficient cities for the future.
